Multimodal Transit Options to Meet Your Needs

Highways and Interstates

Northwest Colorado’s multimodal transit options keep business and people on the move. Most of Northwest Colorado is connected by U.S. Highway 40 which reaches Denver. The region can also access I-70, a major east-west interstate that connects our region to Utah in the west and Maryland to the east. Northwest Colorado is less than two hours from I-80, an east–west transcontinental freeway that connects both coasts.

Class I Rail

Northwest Colorado sites are rail served with Union Pacific Railroad lines and spurs in Craig and Hayden. UP provides affordable cargo shipment to domestic markets west of the Mississippi River, as well as transcontinental and global reach.

Public Transit

Northwest Colorado offers safe, affordable public transportation to enhance and extend personal mobility with plans for service expansion underway. Currently, the Colorado Department of Transportation Bustang Outrider regional service connects Craig, Hayden and Steamboat Springs to Denver. Learn more.

Locally, the Steamboat Springs Transit offers fixed-routes within and between Craig, Hayden and Steamboat Springs and provides on-demand services. Learn more.

Efforts are underway to explore the establishment of a regional transportation authority (RTA) in Northwest Colorado. An RTA would coordinate transportation planning, funding, and operations across multiple jurisdictions, enhancing connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability in the region. This could involve initiatives such as:

  • Multi-modal transportation planning
Developing comprehensive transportation plans that consider the needs of all modes of transportation, including roadways, public transit, airports, and trails.
  • Funding and financing strategies
Exploring innovative funding mechanisms, such as sales taxes or special districts, to support transportation infrastructure and services.
  • Collaborative partnerships
Building partnerships between local governments, transportation agencies, businesses, and community organizations to leverage resources and expertise in addressing transportation challenges and opportunities.

Northwest Colorado is moving toward the future with confidence and expanding capabilities.
